Walk through open grasslands and by groves of majestic Englemann oaks on this lesser trekked trail.

This is one of the least traveled areas adjacent to the Cuyamacas and supports healthy groves of majestic Englemann oaks. Walk through open grasslands to discover the remnants of a century-old ditch designed to shunt water from Pine Valley Creek into the San Diego River drainage. There is even the possibility of seeing lions, tigers and bears from a safe distance. This is an intermediate 4-mile hike with an elevation change of 450 feet. The hike is scheduled from 8–11:30 AM.

Red-Tailed Roost connects to several other trail systems, but this hike will return via Escondido Ravine Road. Choose between two intermediate hikes that pass through a riparian habitat wildlife area. This hike passes through a riparian habitat wildlife area with the remains of a cabin and evidence of floodwaters. Lunch will be along a creek, sitting on boulders, before heading back on the trailhead. Two hike options will be offered. A shorter intermediate 5-mile hike with an elevation change of 950 feet, or continue on to complete an intermediate 6-mile hike with an elevation change of 1200 feet. The hike is scheduled from 9 AM–12:30 PM or 9 AM–1:30 PM.

(Jamul) From I-8, take I-805 S and go 3.9 miles. Exit on CA-94 E (M. L. King Jr. Fwy.) and go 5.2 miles. Keep right to stay on CA-94 E and go 5.1 miles. Turn right on Campo Rd. and go 9.5 miles. Turn left on Honey Springs Rd. and then make a quick left into the parking lot to meet the Canyoneer host. Walk an old highway that's being reclaimed by nature. Walk on some of the last remnants of Old Highway 80 as it descends down towards San Diego. This stretch has been abandoned for almost 70 years and has been partially reclaimed by nature. We'll walk to Ellis Spring, which was a refuge for motorists that were making the challenging drive either up from the city or down from the desert. For those wanting a longer hike, we'll continue on to an overlook of the modern Interstate 8 that replaced Highway 80. This is an easy 4-mile hike with an elevation change of 750 feet. Hike through areas of spectacular vegetation with giant granite boulders.

Morena Reservoir and the Pacific Crest Trail in the Cleveland National Forest provide access to some spectacular areas of vegetation, including riparian and chaparral communities. Giant granitic boulders border portions of the lake and hint at the geological processes that helped form the area. This is an intermediate 6-mile hike with an elevation change of 950 feet. The hike is scheduled from 9 AM–1:30 PM.

(Morena Village) Take I-8 to the Buckman Springs Rd. exit. Turn west on Buckman Springs Rd. and go 5.3 miles. Turn right on Oak Rd. and go 1.6 miles. Turn right on Lake Morena Dr. and go 0.5 mile. If you’re looking for a longer hike through some beautiful mountain scenery, then this might be for you. This hike includes desert views, shady forest, grinding rocks, and pristine meadows. You might even encounter some mountain wildlife such as mule deer, wild turkeys, coyotes,stellar jays, woodpeckers, hawks and maybe even a bobcat. Oak and pine trees, elderberry, wild roses, nettles, prickly pear cactus and ceanothus are only a few of the plants to be found on the trail. Look for birds and other wildlife along the lower section of Rose Creek in Mission Bay. Rose Creek is the natural outfall of a 36 square-mile watershed including nearby Rose and San Clemente canyons. The creek meanders around the canyon floor until it drains into Mission Bay. We’ll be exploring the lower section of the creek starting at Mission Bay and looking for the wildlife that call the creek home. Birds such as the rarely seen Light-Footed Clapper Rail and Belding's Savannah Sparrow have been spotted here, so birders should bring their binoculars! The mix of fresh and salt water also supports a unique habitant for plants that have adapted to a constantly changing environment. This is an easy 3-mile hike with an elevation change of 150 feet. Hike and boulder scramble through dry waterfalls. This hike starts out in a flat sandy wash but eventually begins to climb. Some boulder scrambling and dry waterfall ascents are necessary to reach our final destination to a series of natural water tanks (or "Tinaja"), where seasonal rainfall collects and provides water for the area’s wildlife well into the hot days of summer. Bighorn sheep are known to take advantage of this precious resource. A variety of birds, reptiles, and plants also make this canyon their home. Boulder scrambling and ascending dry waterfalls add extra challenges to this hike. Good footwear, a hat, plenty of water, and lunch, will make this a much more enjoyable and safe hike. This is a difficult 6-mile hike with an elevation change of 1350 feet including some strenuous challenges. The hike is scheduled from 9 AM–2 PM.

Hike through a canyon to a remote landslide dam. Coyote Mountain at the northern end of Borrego Valley is an 8-mile-long elongate fault block made up of granitic and metamorphic rocks. A series of landslide areas are found on the southwest slopes. This hike follows a steep canyon to a remote landslide dam and alluvium-filled basin that was once an ephemeral lake behind the dam before it was filled with 150-feet of alluvium. Drainage now flows unimpeded down a canyon toward the east into Clark Valley. This canyon is the approach to the dam and basin. Trekking poles recommended. Meander along an easy hike where animals, plants, and the remains of an ancient Kumeyaay site can be spotted. Kumeyaay seasonal presence has been documented here for at least the past 1100 years. You may see grinding holes, rock shelters, and agave roasting pits, as well as ocotillo, agave, lavender, and chia, along this hike. Sometimes you may find Borrego hoof prints, occasionally a jackrabbit, or, high in a cleft, a chuckwalla or a messy raptor nest. This is an easy 3-mile hike with an elevation change of 300 feet. Choose between two difficult hikes that pass by a variety of marine fossil, caves, and canyons. Along the trail, discover an amazing variety of marine fossils attesting to the ocean waters that once covered this area. Stop at the other-worldly Domelands wind caves for a lunch break before retracing our path. The longer hike will go through the Domelands slot and is a more difficult hike. It should only be undertaken by hikers that are in good physical condition. Two hike options will be offered. A shorter difficult 5-mile hike with an elevation change of 1000 feet, or continue on to complete a difficult 8-mile hike with an elevation change of 1900 feet. The Army Corps of Engineers built rock-faced dikes on both sides of the San Diego River that have created an estuary that is home to numerous birds, fish, and invertebrates. Ramona Grasslands County Preserve (Old Survey Road 97) | New!

Hike through grasslands as you take in scenic mesas, rocky outcrops, and the Santa Maria creek.

This trail has historic roots. Old Survey Road 97 was established in the mid-19th century as a way to route travelers between the San Pasqual and Santa Maria valleys. It was used for mail deliveries and by ranchers, as well as soldiers on their way to the Battle of San Pasqual in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. Until recently, this out-and-back trail on the northwest side of the Ramona Grasslands County Preserve had very limited access due to nearby golden eagle nesting sites and the bird’s nesting season. A new route now allows this trail to remain open all year. It’s surrounded by native vegetation and offers views of scenic coastal mesas, rocky outcrops and the Santa Maria Creek, which flows through the Ramona Grasslands. A scenic hike in a canyon up to a remote inner pasture. Hike through Moonlight Canyon from the Agua Caliente Hot Springs to the isolated Inner Pasture. The Yaqui Well Trail is another short hike that ascends a rocky ravine, and then descends into the meadows at Yaqui Well. Walk along one of the most scenic sections of coastline in San Diego County. The paved sidewalk goes past the Children’s Pool, which, despite its name, is not a pool but a gorgeous secluded beach. Keep an eye out for harbor seals and sea lions, both in the ocean and sunning on the sand and rocks. We’ll also pass by Ellen Browning Scripps Park and La Jolla Cove before turning around at Coast Walk Vista Point. Seagulls, pelicans, cormorants and other coastal birds make this a great walk for bringing your binoculars. This is an easy 2-mile hike with an elevation change of 550 feet. Explore the glory and rich history of the Cuyamaca Mountains during this intermediate hike. This hike is a reminder of the past glory of the Cuyamaca Mountains, as some of the trees here were not destroyed or damaged by the 2003 Cedar Fire. Additionally, the area is steeped in history. It was in the early 1870s that gold was first discovered in the Cuyamaca/Julian area, sparking a gold rush that lasted over 20 years. Spot birds and other wildlife on an easy hike through four thriving habitats. This 11.6-acre preserve is owned and managed by the San Diego Bird Alliance (formally Audubon Society) for the benefit of birds, other wildlife, and their habitats. The Preserve contains four distinctive, thriving plant communities: coastal sage scrub (an endangered habitat in Southern California), oak woodland, mixed riparian woodland, and freshwater pond. The different types of habitat attract a large variety of wildlife species, especially birds—more than 100 bird species have been identified at the preserve. Numerous mammals also reside in, or visit, the Preserve, including raccoons, rabbits, ground squirrels, skunks, coyotes and bobcats. Several species of reptiles and amphibians have been observed, and butterflies are drawn to the native plants. This is an easy 1-mile hike with an elevation change of 50 feet. Come find a hidden mountain pond and abandoned gold mine in this high altitude section of Anza-Borrego. Even though this is part of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, its higher altitude and location next to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park make this a wonderful mountain meadow hike. We’ll visit the abandoned Golden Queen Mine as well as the rock foundations of an old homestead. The highlight will be the picturesque views of seldom visited Tulloch Pond before making the return trip back to Fages Monument. A long hike that will show you some incredible landscapes. We’ll carpool from the Sunrise Trailhead Parking area to Kwaamii Pt. to pick up a northbound segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail skirts the edge of Cottonwood Canyon with an unbroken 3000 foot drop to the desert floor. There are great views into Anza-Borrego Desert State Park as well as the nearby Oriflamme and Chariot Mountains. Along the way back to the cars, you’ll pass through low-growing chaparral consisting of shiny-leaf yerba santa, manzanita, buckwheat, chamise, mountain-mahogany, and scattered scrub oaks. This loop has excellent views along the trail at Boucher Hill. Stop at a California Registered historical fire-lookout tower at an elevation of 5348 feet. (Palomar Mountain) Take I-15 N past Escondido, exiting on CA-76 east toward Pala. Go 20 miles, then take the South Grade Rd. (S-6) for 6.7 miles. Hike an extinct volcano home to rare plants, birds, and reptiles. Spring Valley’s Dictionary Hill acquired its name as part of a historical real-estate scheme. But 125 million years ago, the hill was part of a chain of offshore volcanic islands. Today the Hill’s fertile metavolcanic soil supports a number of rare plants, birds, and reptiles. The summit offers a panoramic view of southeast San Diego. Trekking poles are recommended. This hike is part of a three-hike series visiting San Diego’s historical volcanoes (Black Mountain, Mount Calavera, Dictionary Hill). Choose your adventure in an area known for birds and flowering shrubs. ​​Explore the lower slopes of the Laguna Mountains hiking above a seasonal creek. A variety of flowering shrubs are often found along the trail as well as many birds and other wildlife. The shorter 4-mile hike will go to a shady grove of Coulter pines before heading back. The longer 6-mile hike will continue on and drop down to meet the Noble Canyon Trail before beginning the return trip​​. Two hike options will be offered. A shorter intermediate 3-mile hike with an elevation change of 400 feet, or continue on to complete an intermediate 6-mile hike with an elevation change of 1250 feet. Hike part of the Pacific Crest Trail and an area full of old growth trees and rich riparian habitats. This trail is a hidden gem in the Buckman Springs/Lake Moreno area. On this hike, we will head upstream on Kitchen Creek, passing through old growth willow, cottonwood, and mixed riparian vegetation. Once we come to the bridge under I-8, we will catch the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and climb up the ridge to the east. Beautiful views and overhead chaparral plant communities dress the trail as it climbs up to a large, flat boulder outcropping–a great place for a break and views of Lake Moreno. The trail then meanders down to Hidden Creek, which flows west to join with Kitchen Creek and into the lake. This is an intermediate 5-mile hike with an elevation change of 650 feet. The hike is scheduled from 8 AM–noon.

(Morena Village) Take I-8 E to the Buckman Springs Rd. exit. Turn right (south) on Buckman Springs Rd. (S-1) and go 3.5 miles. Take in dramatic ocean views and watch for sea birds on this easy hike. Dramatic ocean views and impressive cliffs overlooking pocket beaches are the hallmark of this park. The sandstone cliffs erode naturally with wave action. This is also a great spot to watch sea birds, such as pelicans, western gulls, and cormorants, glide above the ocean's surface. The stairs at the corner of Ladera Street and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard offer a breathtaking journey down the cliffs to the north end of Garbage Beach, which can be explored at low tide.
