Celebrating its 10th year, Snapshot Cal Coast invites you to explore and share observations of wildlife along the California coast using the iNaturalist app during the entire month of June. An initiative of the California Academy of Sciences, Snapshot Cal Coast focuses on data collection from all coastal-influenced habitats, with an emphasis on rocky intertidal areas.

Whether you participate solo or at a bioblitz event, your contributions aid important scientific research on species ranges and biodiversity changes. By participating, you’re empowering efforts to protect California’s coastal ecosystems. Learn more and get involved today!

Getting Started

  1. Download the iNaturalist App: Available on iOS and Android.
  2. Create an Account: Start making observations right away.
  3. Join the Project: Join the Snapshot Cal Coast 2025 project on iNaturalist to track your observations.
  4. Visit the Coast: Head out on your own or join an event to observe and document coastal species during the whole month of June.
  5. Observe During Low Tide: If you’re heading to the tide pools, use Cal Academy’s TideFinder to locate low tides in your area.
  6. Share Your Experience: Use the hashtag #SnapshotCalCoast on social media.
  7. Help us make a difference in documenting coastal species by participating in the Snapshot Cal Coast. Your observations can lead to a greater understanding and conservation of these vital ecosystems. Happy exploring!
